Appreciation (gratitude) has the power to improve every aspect of heath and wellbeing, and help you 'keep going' on this journey to Becoming Your Story
'Appreciation' is an energy force generated within us. I call it Mouse energy.
However, some time back, I was reminded of a more powerful aspect of appreciation. It is the power of 'Being Appreciated'.
'Being Appreciated' is an energy force generated from others. I call this Elephant energy.
In a previous article, I stated that "Everyone has the need or desire to feel valued." Remember the sentence written in in invisible ink on every forehead? Think of your own life. Have you ever done or said something that someone really appreciated, and he/she took the time to let you know? Did that energise you?
A while back, I was reminded of the powerful energy that comes from 'being appreciated.' So what happened to remind me? It was the entering of an 'elephant in the room'. However, unlike the customary 'elephant in the room', this one was not an energy draining problem, but rather an energy enhancing joy that came from being appreciated.
A client who had attended one of my courses in the past, returned several years later, and I was delighted to once again have the opportunity to support him. Yes, I was definitely an appreciative little mouse. :-)
Imagine my surprise when he casually mentioned in one of our sessions that 3 months prior !!!, he had printed out 2 of my articles dealing with the communication challenges of the 'Different Worlds' each of us lives in, and that he had distributed copies to his team.
Now imagine how I felt when he went on to inform me that he had told his team that this theme was very important for them to understand, so that their interactions with clients, suppliers etcetera, were based on providing products and services from the client's perspective of what was important, and not their own.
Wow! What a positive secondary application of information that I normally use to help clients deal with the complicated communication issues involved in workplace conflict!
Learning how my words had 'been appreciated' generated elephant energy in me, motivating me to pen this article. My only wish was that he had told me 3 months before.
The point and the lesson behind the story of The Mouse And The Elephant?
If you appreciate something that someone says or does, please tell them.., and as soon as possible. Being appreciated for the smallest thing, can energise and bring the biggest smile to the face of a co-worker, a child, a spouse, a friend or even a complete stranger who treats us kindly. And did I mention it also makes us feel good? What a win/win.
